"A Stone's Throw," 2025 / 302 East College Street / Colquitt, GA / 660 sq. ft.
CLIENT REQUESTS: Spring Creek Health Cooperative, a non-profit organization based in Colquitt, Georgia,
received a grant through the Council on Alcohol and Drugs to create a work to increase awareness of opioid abuse and suicide prevention. The goal of the project is to create an artwork that inspires hope to those struggling with opioid addiction and suicidal ideation. The mural will use the Swamp Gravy play A Stone’s Throw as a point of inspiration.
SOLUTION: Drawing inspiration from Swamp Gravy, a local folk-life theatre blending storytelling and real-life tales from Southwest Georgia into dramatic performances, photo references and play recordings were used to create a narrative piece about a family who lost their son due to suicide. The piece explores a family’s journey through grief, connection, hope, and meaning through the people whose lives he touched. Set along a South Georgia creek at golden dusk, the mural uses colorful fishing corks, rippling water, a paper boat, and a tackle box to symbolize remembrance, the ripple effects of loss, and the strength found in choosing hope and coming together.
